The newest concept to be unveiled by Volkswagen using its Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), giving it a long wheelbase, a compact powertrain that sits inside the flooring, and generous interior space. In fact, the concept I.D CROZZ is smaller than the 2018 long-wheelbase VW Tiguan overall, and yet it offers just about the same amount of interior room, proving this concept isn’t just giving lipservice to the idea of an “Open Space” philosophy. There’s much more to discover about the I.D CROZZ, but if you want to catch a glimpse, check out the unveiling in the video below.

Highlight Reel:

A few tidbits stood out to us as we learned about the I.D CROZZ concept vehicle, so we wanted to pass those on to our readers here:

  • The I.D CROZZ blinks! You read that right. The lighting in the I.D CROZZ is fully interactive, and when the vehicle is parked, the front of the vehicle appears as though the eyes are “closed,” with just a small strip of LED lighting showing through. You can “wake up” the vehicle by interacting with it, which delivers a dazzling delightful play of lights across the body of the vehicle.
  • the I.D CROZZ is expected to deliver 302 horsepower with a range of 311 miles based on the New European Driving Cycle. By 2025, we’ll be kissing range anxiety goodbye forever!
  • There will be an autonomous driving mode called “I.D Pilot” mode, bringing us one step closer to the mobility of the future!
  • The battery in the I.D CROZZ is estimated to be able to charge up to 80 percent in a mere 30 minutes when using a 150-kilowatt DC fast charger.

Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand says: "By 2025, we want to have sales of pure electric vehicles up to one million units a year. The I.D. CROZZ will play a key role in that. Production will start in 2020." —from an April 18, 2017 Volkswagen U.S. Press Release

The MEB’s dynamic proportions provide an ideal platform for a carefully considered electric mobility design DNA. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, explains: "If it was ever possible to make a one-hundred percent certain prediction of what the future will look like, here it is. In 2017, we are showing how Volkswagen will be transforming the roadscape from 2020. For us, the three prototypes of this new generation of zero-emission vehicles—I.D., I.D. BUZZ and I.D. CROZZ—mark the start of a design and technology revolution that is going to change individual mobility and the Volkswagen brand forever." —from an April 18, 2017 Volkswagen U.S. Press Release

As the third concept in the “I.D Concept” family Volkswagen has been steadily developing and unveiling at various auto shows, starting with the I.D. in Paris and the I.D BUZZ in Detroit, the I.D CROZZ is a sporty crossover that brings all the elegance of a coupe, the utility of a CUV, and a fierce, all-electric powertrain. We still have quite some time to wait before any of us can bring this futuristic crossover home for good, but it definitely gets our imaginations churning. Full production is expected to start in 2020, so if you’re looking for a great vehicle in the meantime, the current Volkswagen lineup is still your best bet.
