When you're driving down the road around Turnersville, Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel, the last thing you want to be thinking about is potential tire failure. But the truth is that it is way more common than you might think. And what looks like a flat tire, could really have been something else all along. To help you prevent a tire failure, the team at Prestige Volkswagen has put together a list of the most common signs. Take a look and be sure to get your tires inspected regularly as part of your preventative maintenance.
Warning #1 - The Thread is Worn Down
If the tread on your tires is less than 1/16th of an inch, it's time to get new tires. But how do you know exactly what the depth is? You can easily grab a ruler and put it in the deepest part of the tread and measure out. Or you can pay attention to the interior white indicator bars that run across the tread for your convenience. If you can see those, it's time to get some new tires. You can also use a regular old penny. Put it into the deepest part of the tread and if you can see the top of President Lincoln's head, your tires are ready to be replaced.
Warning #2 - Excessive Vibration & Road Noise
If your vehicle is usually a pretty smooth ride and it's relatively quiet when you're driving, but it's really loud now and there's some vibration in the steering wheel, then it's possible that you may have some internal tire damage. Alternately, this could be a sign of a wheel misalignment, unbalanced wheels or inconsistent tire inflation. Take your vehicle to your local service department near Cherry Hill, Turnersville and Mount Laurel and have them take a look at your tires and wheels to see exactly what the problem is; you may need new tires.
Warning #3 - Bulges, Blisters, Cuts or Cracks
Your tires should be evenly inflated all the way around and they should be free of anything that looks like it might leak air. So if you see a bulge, blister, cut, crack or inconsistent tire inflation, your tires need to be replaced. It's likely that the composite material that the tires are made of has reached the end of its lifetime and if you keep driving on those tires, you're likely to have a blowout and potentially cause a collision.
